Backup Your Writing

July 18th, 2014
We've all done it and it's disheartening. You've worked hard on a writing project only to lose it. Your computer is stolen or it crashes and everything you've worked on is gone. Forever. Or the pages you wrote on blew away in a massive gust of wind. You want to find the nearest bridge and jump off. Okay, that's a little drastic but you know what I mean. Starting today, back up every word you ...

All Your Eggs in One Basket

April 17th, 2014
When I started freelance writing for magazines and newspapers over a decade ago, LS was one of the few magazines that took a chance on me in my first year. The editor at that time, Jack, was fabulous and inspired me to be an even greater writer. I wrote for almost every issue in the following years until a new editor took over, Carole. I was nervous at first about the change. Jack had been so ...

Writing Scammers

February 11th, 2014
Just like any industry, writing isn't without its share of wanna-be criminals trying to scam money out of naive people.  It seems in recent months that this problem has kicked up to another level. I was flipping through a writing magazine and came across an ad for a website that promises (yes, promises!) to publish everything you've ever written for a "nominal fee".  Their fees can run ...

Your Inner Critic

October 11th, 2013
Many writers speak of the challenges of writing when their inner critic keeps filling their head with doubt about their creative ability.  Their critic also makes them question how worthwhile the words are that they've written. While I am not usually a violent person, this situation calls for drastic action.  I can't recommend strongly enough that you do what I did if this is a problem ...

What is a Writer?

September 18th, 2013
What is a writer?  People ask me that question a lot these days.  They seem to be looking for validation for themselves or have a need to put a label on things.  Whatever the reason, I am always happy to share my well-thought-out and lengthy description of what I think a writer is: A writer is someone who writes.  Period. Yes, it really is that simple.  It doesn't need to be a fancy-wrap ...

Factually Correct

December 17th, 2012
Recently I received an email from a well-known professor who pointed out a factual error I had made in an article I posted online about loons.  I’d stated that loons were related to penguins.  The professor pointed out that that fact was “absolutely incorrect” and that the statement I made is as inaccurate as saying Polar Bears live in Antarctica.  He continued in his email to say, “I'm sure ...

Internet Thieves

May 28th, 2012
This week has been especially challenging with writing-related issues. A fellow I've been doing some work for has been creating some new e-book covers for my published e-books as some of mine are pretty pathetic, I’ll admit. When I uploaded the third new e-book cover to Amazon and resubmitted it, I got an email back from Amazon saying that they did a routine check and that my work is avail ...

Addiction

February 11th, 2012
Now that I have unburied my head from the sand, I see that I haven’t posted an entry on here in almost 10 months.  I blame it on my e-book addiction.  When not doing the necessities of life - sleeping, eating, doing laundry, working, flossing my teeth, and such - I have been writing e-books.  I can’t believe I stalled for almost two years from the time the e-book idea burrowed into m ...

E-books

April 27th, 2011
Spurred on by the success of fellow writers with e-books, I have been inspired to get my own manuscripts polished up and available for sale online as e-books.  I have two e-books online so far, one a 77,000 word women's novel and the other a nonfiction book on writing prompts.  I am polishing up book #3 and hope to get it online in another week or two; it's a 25,000 word book on what typical ...

Write Away at the Write-In

February 13th, 2011
Today I attended a Write-In, as the event organizer called it.  Held at the community centre in Crossfield, a town 15 minutes north of where I currently live, the Write-In was a day slated to do just that – WRITE.  It started at 9 a.m. when we checked in and paid our $25 to cover the cost of the room rental and the catered breakfast and lunch.  We even had name placards to put in front of us ...
